Loyd Ham, age 76, of Austin, a loving husband, father, grandfather, passed away on Thursday, December 29, 2011. He was a retired City of Austin employee and a USAF Veteran.

Loyd was born October 15, 1935 in Littlefield, Texas. In his teens, his family moved to Anton, Texas where he worked at the local cotton gin picking cotton. In 1956, Loyd joined the Air Force and served until 1959. He married Joan Couch and moved to Weslaco where their daughter Donna and son, John, were born. He worked for Joan's father as a farming foreman and also worked as a mechanic.

Loyd's passion for motorcycles and stock car racing developed while in Weslaco and continued until his death. He raced motorcycles in the 1960's and added stock cars in the 1970's. His other love was animals which would always have a home at Loyd's house. He had numerous pets and also raced Greyhounds. He is survived by his Chihuahua "Mini," who never left his side.

The family moved to Austin in 1975 when Loyd began working at the Texas State School for the Deaf. Joan lost her battle with cancer and passed away on January 13, 1981. Loyd remained in Austin working as a mechanic and continued his love of racing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Lillie Ham; his first wife, Joan.

Loyd met Sheila O'Connor and they married in 1985. He became a Stepdad to her three children, Steffiney, Amity, and Dara who lived with them. He retired from the City of Austin in 1997 and they remained in the Austin area where they proudly welcomed 13 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
One of his favorite pastimes was going to bingo games with Sheila. He loved going to Las Vegas and enjoyed a final trip there in May 2011 with Sheila, Donna, John, and Tricia.

Loyd was diagnosed with melanoma in December 2010. He was a very proud man and maintained his dignity until the day he passed, December 29, 2011.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm on Monday, January 2, 2012 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 2620 South Congress Avenue. Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, January 3, 2011 at Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel. Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery.

The family would like to thank Hospice Austin for all their kindness during Loyd's illness.
