Luke L. Rogers, 74, of East Grafton Road, died on Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at Fairmont General Hospital, Fairmont, WV.
He was born August 24, 1935, in Marion County, son of the late Virgil L. “Jack” and Sarah (Vincent) Rogers.
Luke was a graduate of East Fairmont High School.
As a young man, Luke had worked with his parents at their restaurant in Fairmont and decided to open his small business years later. He was the owner and operator of Rogers Confectionary for over 30 years. He enjoyed his work and made life long friends, as the store became a gathering place for members of the community. He became well known for his ten cent cup of coffee and the hot dogs that he made.
Luke was a member of Walnut Grove United Methodist Church, where he served as the assistant Sunday School Superintendent for several years.
He was a member of the Cross Roads 4-H Club and continued to serve the community as a member, and later president, of the Cross Roads Community Center Board of Directors.
Luke enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also looked forward to visiting friends and neighbors as he delivered vegetables to them from his garden. As a sports fan, he rarely missed watching the Mountaineers or Steelers play. He especially loved to attend the ballgames, rodeos and horse shows, to watch his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Wanda (Haught) Rogers, who he married August 10, 1957 in Oakland , MD; his daughter Sharon Tennant and her husband Steve, two grandchildren, Stephenie Jane and Shawn Lucas Tennant, all of Fairview; one sister, Margaret Field and her husband Harold and their sons, Benny and Bart Field of Orlando, FL; Nephews, Virgil L. (Sandy) Rogers and his wife Debbie; Phil Rogers all of Fairmont; Bradley Rogers of Morgantown and several great nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Virgil L. “Buck” Rogers, Jr. and his wife Betty (Nuzum) Rogers and one nephew, Edward N. Rogers.
Friends and family may call at the Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home on Saturday from 6pm to 8pm and Sunday 1pm to 8pm and Monday noon to 2pm.
The funeral service will be Monday, March 22, 2010 at 2pm at the funeral home with Pastor Jim Zinn officiating. Interment services will follow at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens in Westover.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Cross Roads Community Center, c/o Catherine Shuman, 512 Market Street, Fairmont, WV, 26554.
