Luva Dawn Hiatt, 79, of Payson, passed away at her home on September 14, 2011.
Luva was born November 24, 1931, the third child of Daniel H. and Mary Estella Schaugaard. She attended Payson schools and graduated from Payson High School in 1950. At the age of 14 she began working as a candy striper at the old Payson Hospital. While raising her family she earned a degree in nursing, and was a nurse at Mountain View Hospital for 35 years.
Luva married her high school sweetheart, Dean Luther Hiatt, on March 9, 1950 in the Salt Lake Temple. They have six children; Christine Johnson of Payson, Janet (Ken) Kelley of Santaquin, Jimmy Dean (Maxine) Hiatt of Spanish Fork, Kevin Reid (Charleen) Hiatt of Payson, David L (Diann) Hiatt of Payson, and Steven Glen (Sandra) Hiatt of Payson. Luva held many positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She worked in the Primary, Relief Society, scouting, and was a stake missionary. Luva was a very talented woman. She was a beautiful seamstress and made blessing dresses and baptism dresses for many of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She sewed quilts and clothing, made dolls, crocheted afghans and doilies. She had a fun sense of humor and loved to laugh.
Luva is survived by her children, 25 grandchildren, 52 great grandchildren, two sisters, Ora Nell (LaMont) Anglsey of Salt Lake, and Julie (Alan) Daley of Kanab; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Dean; her parents, Daniel and Stella Schaugaard; a sister and brother, Lola Dean Taylor, and Glen H. Schaugaard; grandson Jacob Blaine Hiatt; and son-in-law, Michael Johnson.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 19, 2011 at 11:00 AM at the Payson 5th Ward, 225 South 400 East. Friends and family may call at the Walker Mortuary, 587 South 100 West, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Sunday, September 18, and at the church on Monday morning, from 9:45 – 10:45. Burial will be at the Payson Cemetery.
Luva's family would like to express thanks to all who spent time helping to take care of this special lady. We are so grateful for Brooke and Diann whose love and devoted care made it possible for our mom to stay at home with her family.
