Mrs. Mabel P. (Rouzer) Shockey Hughes, 91, a resident of Quincy Village and formerly of 14024 Harbaugh Church Road, Waynesboro, died at 12:38 A.M., Monday, January 9, 2012, in the nursing home. She had been in failing health for the past month. Born August 27, 1920 in the Roadside area of Waynesboro, she was the daughter of the late Leolin and Florence M. (Sigler) Rouzer. Mrs. Hughes graduated from Washington Township High School with the class of 1938. She and her first husband, Charles L. Shockey, were married on September 12, 1941 in Hagerstown. He died on December 1, 1965. She married her second husband, Warren Hughes, on August 7, 1969. They moved to the Harbaugh Church Road address in 1973. Mr. Hughes died on January 29, 1984. Mrs. Hughes entered the nursing home on December 3, 2002. Mrs. Hughes worked at Lakeside Community Hall in the Officers Club at Fort Ritchie until its closing in 1998, where she did clerical work and various other jobs as needed. She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, Waynesboro, South Chapter 2977 AARP and the National AARP. Mrs. Hughes enjoyed shopping and attending yard sales. She is survived by four children, Rodney J. Shockey of Wasilla, AK, Frances L. "Fran" George of Waynesboro, Terry W. Shockey of Waynesboro, and Deborah K. Gekoski of Pasadena, MD; 16 grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren; one brother, Melvin Rouzer of Hagerstown, MD; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and two husbands, she was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers. Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, January 12, 2012, in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, with Chaplain John Ile, officiating. Burial will follow in Harbaugh Church Cemetery, Rouzerville. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services, Thursday morning, in the funeral home.
