Gladys Marcella Osborn was born on October 24, 1924 to Halvor and
Martha Louise Norem in rural Zearing, Iowa. She attended a country
school nearby and graduated from McCallsburg High School, class of
1943. She married Archie Osborn on March 16, 1947 and raised their
eight children on the family farm. She was a hard-working farm wife
doing whatever necessary to help Archie. She managed a large garden
and raised chickens to help off-set the cost for groceries.
Marcella took interest in many things including sewing, embroidery,
crocheting, painting drinking glasses, making hot pad holders,
slippers, fabric nativity, and Bible covers and enjoyed sharing them
with her children and grandchildren. She looked forward to
Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter gatherings when she made lefsa
and kumla. She was very competitive when playing games and loved
playing Phase 10, Hearts, Pitch, Rummy, and Nertz.
Marcella, 87, passed peacefully on June 29, 2012 while surrounded by
her family at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. She has now
gone home to be with the Lord Jesus and has left a legacy of faith to
her children: Helen Wright of Zearing, IA, Harley Osborn of Zearing,
IA, Marlene (Rick) Tjernagel of Story City, IA, Gary (Patty) Osborn
of Elkhorn, NE, Mary (Don) Birkentall of Omaha, NE, Karen (Elvis)
Soto of Oswego, IL, Norene (David) Moyer of Geneva, IL, and David
(Cari) Osborn of Cummings, IA; 23 grandchildren; 6 greatgrandchildren;
1 great-great grandchild; a sister, Clara (Don)
Whattoff; sisters-in-law, Aileen (Howard) Swanson and Vivian
(Wayne deceased) Osborn; and many nieces and nephews. She was
preceded in death by her husband of 51 years.
