As I sit here on Thanksgiving, 2009, childhood memories flood my mind of spending this and other holidays with the Ayer’s family. I can picture those special occasions as Margaret, whom I called Mrs. Ayers, made me feel as one of her own children. In fact, I was included on many of their family outings such as: skiing, 4H horse jumping events, swimming, and even a visit to her home town of Independence, Virginia. Margaret was one of the extraordinary and special people that God places among us as a blessing and as an example of His love. She made everyone’s life little better because she cared about others over herself. She was a woman of true southern hospitality as her home was home to all. She greeted everyone with a hug and offered a glass of homemade lemonade, iced tea, or other refreshments. As a child, I did not want to leave. She was truly the Proverbs 31 woman who practiced love as defined in 1Cor 13. She was one of the Lord’s good and faithful servants. I have no doubt she heard the words: Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord (Mathew 25:23). I will always be grateful to her because she taught by example and that example is now being extended to my children.

I remember Margaret from my childhood.She was one on the few and nicest neighbors we had. My heart-felt condolences to her family.

Margaret was a bright smile, a warm heart and a caring soul, bound in enthusiasm, wrapped in class and delivered in dignity. What an example for us all. The loss is not only to her family and loved ones, but to all who knew her and whose lives she touched. As I have benefitted from her joy, her love and her kindness, so will I attempt to model myself after her. Our last conversation occurred while she was in the hospital in Florida and I had an opportunity to let her know how much she has meant to me and that I loved her. I was able to visualize her smiling as she told me, with great conviction, that she was ready for what the Lord had in store for her next and that she was at peace.
