Margaret D. Harte, 79, died October 31, 2011, in Stuart, Florida after a long illness. She was born and raised in Hoosick Falls, New York, then moved to Bennington, Vermont when she married Charles G. Harte, where together they owned and operated a successful real estates agency for many years, while raising their six children. Upon relocating to Stuart with her husband in 1981, Margaret enjoyed an active career in real estate, specializing primarily in the sale and marketing of Premier Properties on Hutchinson Island in Martin County for nearly three decades, having most recently affiliated with Water Point Realty Group in Sewalls Point.
Margaret was extensively involved in philanthropic work and actively suported several area charitable organizations. As a board member, Margaret served as a leading ambassador for the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast. In addition, she was a member of the Women in Philanthropy Group of Stuart, The Martin Memorial Foundation, The Elliot Museum, The Martin County Historical Society, The Literary Society of Martin County, The Lyric Theater, and other cultural and civic organizations. Margaret was a long time member of St. Josephs Catholic Church and was a faithful parishioner for many years. She was also very devoted to family and friends, was an avid reader, enjoyed travel, cooking, art and especially loved animals.
She attended St. Rose College in Albany, New York where she majored in Art and minored in Business. Margaret is survived by her six children: Alice, Gregory, Deborah and Micheal of Florida, Robert of Waipahu, Hawaii, and Charissa Harte Comar of Bennington, Vermont, four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years and a brother, George E. Dougherty, Jr.
Memorial contributions to support pancreatic cancer research may be made to Johns Hopkins University Hospital Memorial Institute, 401 N. Broadway, Baltimore, MD 21231.
SERVICES: Private services will be held at St. Josephs Catholic Church, Stuart, Florida. Arrangements are by Forest Hills Funeral Home, Palm City, Florida.
