Guilford - Margaret Lyons Borkowski, 94, died Tuesday morning, July 19th at Thompson House. She was born 1917 in Brattleboro, the daughter of James and Margaret (Fitzgerald) Lyons. She graduated St. Michaels High School in 1935 and attended Keene State College. On July 22, 1940 she married John Borkowski and moved to the Borkowski homestead on Borkowski Road in Guilford where she resided for seventy-one years. Known as "Mrs. B" to her students, she was employed as a paraprofessional at Oak Grove School for fifteen years. A sales associate for Brattleboro Area Realty and Charles LaRosa Real Estate she retired in 1992. As a member of the Guilford Historical Society and the Brattleboro Emblem Club, Mrs. Borkowski volunteered at the Brattleboro Red Cross for fourteen years. Active with the Guilford Fair Association, she founded and chaired the Guilford Fair Horse Show for ten years. Mrs. Borkowski was a member of the American Contract Bridge League and a communicant of St. Michaels Catholic Church. An avid reader of John Grisham novels, Mrs. Borkowski traveled to the Middle East, Ireland, Italy, Sweden, Poland and Bulgaria. She cherished her visits with her grandchildren, great grandchildren, her friends and Guilford neighbors. She was predeceased by her sons Timothy in 1958, William in 1976, her husband in 2000; her brother Francis "Bud" Lyons of Groton, CT, her sister Kathryn Thompson of Worcester, MA, and her sister Barbara Galvin of Paxton, MA. She is survived by her daughter Ann-Marie Elkins and her husband Richard of Brattleboro; four grandchildren: Todd Borkowski, Beth Zagryn, Kim Cook and Ava Elkins; seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 12:00 P.M. at St. Michael's Catholic Church with Rev. Richard O'Donnell, pastor, celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Michael's Parish Cemetery. There are no calling hours at the funeral home.
