Margaret Whitaker Jenkins, daughter of the late James and Viola Whitaker, was born on November 14, 1937 in Newark, New Jersey. Her formal education began in the Newark Public School system. As a young girl, her family moved to New York where they took up residence in Harlem. Margaret attended high school in New York and graduated in the class of 1955. There she joined Grace Congregational Church and was baptized. After graduation she was employed by the New York Bell Telephone Company. There she formed lasting relationships and a business career that lasted approximately thirty-seven years. On October 17, 1959, Margaret and Robert Jenkins were married. In 1992, Margaret retired and became her mother's primary caregiver for over sixteen years. Challenges and illnesses did not eradicate special celebrations and fun visits with family in New Jersey, Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia. Traveling was one of Margaret's passions. During her lifetime she traveled extensively throughout the United States including Hawaii, Mexico, Europe and the Caribbean. This year in July, she enjoyed a fun filled vacation in the Bahamas. She also enjoyed shopping, attending Broadway plays and concerts, listening to music and dancing by herself around the house. Margaret was a cat lover and enjoyed caring for her pet cats and birds. She also loved to collect dolls and displayed them in her home. On September 19, 2011, Margaret was called home to be with her mother and the Lord. Surviving with precious memories are: aunt, Ethel Byrd of Montclair, New Jersey; a host of cousins including Jacqueline Johnson of Laurel, MD and Valarie Campbell of Linden, NJ; best friend, Jean Regis and her daughter, Mitra Smith; neighbors, other sorrowing relatives and friends. From Me to You Sorry I had to leave in a sudden kind of way, But I had a friend to say He needed me that day. I didn't have time to call or even say, "Goodbye," For this friend of mine was in a hurry so I didn't even try. I knew you would understand cause that's the way you are, Don't worry about the distance cause it's really not that far. Don't wait up for me and please don't cry, Besides, did you hear me say, "Goodbye." This Online Memorial has been created to commemorate the life of Margaret Whitaker Jenkins.
