Mariano Corales Arenas was a Leap Year baby born on February 29, 1940 in Quinarayan, Narvacan, Ilocos Sur, Philippines. He was the youngest of five children. "Mar", as he was affectionately known, attended Manila Central University where he studied dentistry for two years. He decided to join the U.S. Navy in October of 1962, proudly serving for 11 years. He worked as a chef in the Navy and achieved the rank of 2nd Class Petty Officer. He valiantly fought in the Vietnam War and was awarded with several medals, including the National Defense Medal, the Vietnam Service medal with one bronze seal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign medal, and the FMF Combat Operations Insignia.

Mar married his sweetheart, Estrella Foronda, on December 23, 1967. After living the military lifestyle on various U.S. bases, he and his family eventually settled in Oxnard, CA. Mar retired from the Navy and then worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 15 years. In his spare time, he enjoyed deep-sea fishing and gardening as well as dancing. He was known for his quick wit, great sense of humor, delicious cooking, generosity, and compassionate heart.

Our beloved Mar passed away peacefully on December 1, 2011 surrounded by his loved ones. He is survived by his devoted wife, Estrella; his loving children, Marco, Richard, Catherine, and Robert; and his grandchildren, Eric, Jackie, Elisa, Christina, Maya, Ricky, Jada, Riley, Chloe, Troy, and Avery. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten by those whose lives he has touched.
