Marietta Spaeth Scherer, 91, of Austin, TX, passed away on February 4, 2012 in the comfort of daughter Lucile's residence.

She was born in Crookston, MN on June 16, 1920 to George Howard Spaeth and Alta Lucile Hanson. Marietta graduated from Ada High School in 1938, attended the University of Minnesota and the Minneapolis School of Art pursuing her interests in fashion design, art and drafting. She was married to Dale Robert (Bob) Scherer on April 2, 1949 in San Francisco, CA.

Marietta held various positions with Northwest Airlines in Minneapolis/St. Paul drafting flight plans and with Rand McNally in San Francisco as an ocean cartographer prior to her lifelong vocation of motherhood. In 2010 Marietta published a memoir, leaving a loving legacy to her family and friends. The cover fittingly depicts the border of a quilt - where interwoven patches are symbolic of the many places Marietta lived and visited and the thread that binds them of her characteristic resilience, patience and unassuming manner. She loved art for its true face value and spent her free time reading, sewing/quilting, playing cards and bingo. A page in our book of memories gently turned as Marietta completed her work in this world.

She is survived by her children: Robert Kurt Scherer of Dripping Springs, TX; Jon Eric Scherer (and wife Linda) of Kingston, Rhode Island, William Geoffrey Scherer (and wife Mary) of Austin, TX and Lucile Scherer Temple of Austin, TX. Grandchildren: Jarod (wife Julia), Andrew, Megan, Reed, Robert, Drew and Will Scherer and Glenn Temple. Great Grandchildren: Caleb and Mae Scherer. Siblings: Louise (Robert) Morris and Sandra Spaeth Willis and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Marietta is predeceased by her husband Dale Robert Scherer, son George Stephen Scherer, brother Gerard Spaeth and sister Joanne Spaeth Miller.

A Memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, February 25, 2012 at Weed-Corley-Fish Lake Travis in Lakeway. Her final resting place will be at the side of her husband in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, TX.

Memorial donations can be directed to Ada Public Library, Ada, MN; American Lung Association; Mobile Loaves and Fishes and Heart to Heart Hospice of Austin, TX
