Marin Vivian Thomas Harlow Tucker, age 97, passed the 25th. of March in Hayward ,California surrounded by her family, "daughter" Margarita "Margie" Sara and granddaughter Lisa Tucker. She was born in Oakland California to Sara Edna and Joseph David Thomas on June 24th. 1912. Marin was the grandchild of two California Pioneer families and a lifelong Bay Area resident. She met her husband of 34 years, attorney, Eugene "Gene" Tucker in Berkeley. Together they raised their three sons, attorney Stephen Tucker, Gary Tucker, DDS and Brent Tucker, local businessman and real estate developer. Throughout the years with Marin and Gene's constant love and support, the Tucker family blossomed to include thirteen grandchildren (Lisabet, Jennifer, Eugene, Kendra, Kent, Lissa, Kelley Lynn, Nathan, David, Whitney, Ashley, Jeff and Sarah) and twenty great-grandchildren! (Jacob, Jackson, Benjamin, Lucas, Ryan, Tristan, Benjamin, McKenna, Kiernan, Shea, Brandon, Devon, Ian, Gabrielle, Savannah, Sophia, Laura Main, Leighland, Sierra, and Clementine).

Her many interests included endless hours of volunteer work and membership the PEO organization, Rotary, Oakland Zoo docent , Cal State Hayward Affiliates, Boy Scouts, YMCA and travels to all corners of the the world sharpening her photography skills. Words of Remembrance
Marin V. Tucker
June 24, 1912−March 25, 2010
“The years of my life,” Marin Tucker wrote in April 2004, “have been a combination of all the things one hopes for and those a human does not wish for. [My] young years were happy followed by tragic ones, then came the wonderful span of marriage and motherhood and then sorrowful, but good ones. Now I find my life a mixture of all that came before as I look back and I wonder now what lies ahead for the short span of time remaining.”
Having had the benefit of being able to read and reflect on Marin’s memoirs this past week, I agree with Marin’s assessment that her life was a mixture of joy and sorrow, and (I would add) triumph and tragedy. Yet the overarching themes were ultimately joy and triumph. Consider her life and I suspect that you will agree—the overarching themes of Marin’s life and witness were and are a testament to the great Easter hope that we celebrate tomorrow, and that we remember today.
Marin Vivian Thomas was born in the Thomas family home at 4962 Manila Avenue in Oakland’s lower Rockridge district on June 24, 1912. Her parents were Sara Edna and Joseph David Thomas. They were the son and daughter of two California pioneer families. Marin was a lifelong resident of the Bay Area, and is one of the few native Californians of her generation in our congregation.
Marin’s grandpa, Edmund Davies Thomas, built the Thomas family home in 1909 at a time when Rockridge was just beginning to be converted from farmland to a residential neighborhood.
I remember Marin telling me that even though her grandmothers both died when she was six years old, she remembered them fondly and had a very special relationship with each of them. Marin told me that she was always glad to hear me tell stories about my grandmothers, because they brought back many wonderful memories for her of her own grandmothers.
When Marin was three years old, her parents moved the family to a rental home in Oakland near Lake Merritt. From there they moved to an apartment in Oakland, and then to an apartment in San Francisco. The family moved back to Manila Avenue when Marin was six years old.
Marin attended Emerson Grammar School, Woodrow Wilson Junior High School, and Oakland Technical High School. She matriculated at the University of California at Berkeley (Go Bears!) where she began preparing for a career as a teacher, majoring in Art and Education. She developed a rich and interesting social life in college, and worked on the school paper, The Daily Californian.
During her freshman year at Cal, Marin met Edward Gordon Harlow at a university dance held in the old Harmon Gymnasium.
Ed lived in Richmond, where his father was head chemist at the Standard Oil Company. Marin’s father, Joseph, was a business man in Oakland.
Marin and Edward were college students during the Great Depression. Times were tough in those days. Her father lost his business, and Marin and Ed felt that a fancy wedding was out of the question, so the two
