Brattleboro - Marjorie Stockwell Callahan passed away on July 20th in the loving care of her immediate family. She was born October 22, 1925 in East Putney to Marguerite Blakeslee and George Stockwell. She began her education in a one-room schoolhouse in East Putney just down the road from the family farm. After graduating from St. Michael's high school in 1943 she enrolled in the Providence Hospital School of Nursing in Holyoke Mass. graduating in 1947 with high honors as a Registered Nurse. She financed her first year of training by rising and selling chickens on the family farm and her last years by serving in the U. S. Navy Cadet Nurses Training Program. She was married to William J. Callahan in October of 1949 at St Michaels Church. Marjorie continued her nursing career part time while she and her husband nurtured and cared for their six children. She was employed at several medical facilities in Brattleboro: Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, Thompson House, Pine Heights, and Vernon Green. With her children grown and in college she worked full time for the Town of Brattleboro Visiting Nurse Association from which she retired in the 1980, s. Marjorie was a hospice volunteer in the nascent formation of that organization here in Brattleboro. She was an active member of the Brattleboro Camera club and exhibited her work in many competitions often winning coveted blue ribbons. Marjorie was an accomplished artist in bronze, ceramics and painting. Her work was exhibited in several venues in the Brattleboro area. Marg was a member of the Daughters of Isabella and an active member of St. Michaels Church. She was predeceased by daughter Eileen Baker in June 2011 and previously four bothers William, Raymond, Earl, and Harold Stockwell. She is survived by her husband Bill of 62 years her daughters Terry and Jennifer, three sons Patrick, Timothy and Dan and their spouses, 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren and her sisters Hazel Campbell and Arlene Kathan. The liturgy of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday at 2:00 P.M at St. Michaels Catholic Church with Richard O'Donnell, pastor celebrant. Committal Rights and burial will follow Mass at St Michaels Cemetery. Friends are invited at call at the Atamaniuk Funeral home on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers please send contributions to St. Michael's school, 48 Walnut Street, Brattleboro, VT 05301, in care of Mrs. Elaine Beam, principal.
