Martha T. Lewis
Taylors, SC

Martha Marie Teague Lewis, 80, our beloved Oma and a devout follower and servant of Jesus Christ, died Wednesday, October 19, 2011.

She was a native of Woodruff, South Carolina, and a daughter of the late Thomas Oswald and Frances Leola Phail Teague. Martha was married to the late Rev. Harold Wayne Lewis for 57 years.

Martha ministered as a pastor's wife from 1954 through 1958. In 1958 she and Harold were appointed by the Home Mission Board as church planters in Ohio. They established one church before being appointed by the International Mission Board (IMB) as missionaries to Trinidad, W.I. in 1965 and planted one church there during their first term.

In 1970 they were transferred by the IMB to Suriname, South America to begin Southern Baptist work in the Dutch language, where they established three churches. They served as international missionaries for a total of twenty-nine years.

During those years Martha taught Bible classes and trained young women and men. After their retirement, Martha and Harold made Taylors, SC their home and became members of Taylors First Baptist Church. Martha was involved in the Pilgrim's Pathway Women's Bible Study, Women's Missionary Union and Co-Ed 27 Life Group.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Harriet Lewis; daughter Megan Lewis and daughter and son-in-law Joni and Jeff Little; beloved grandchildren Andrea, Travis, Michael, Rachel, Russell, Andrew, Scott, Alex, Ashlee, Jeffrey and Ana Marie; and three great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Harold and a son, Michael Wayne Lewis.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Taylors First Baptist Church, with Dr. Doug Mize and Dr. Jimmie Harley officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall. Burial will be private.

Memorials may be made to the Taylors First Baptist Church Missions Fund, 200 West Main Street, Taylors, S.C. 29687 in lieu of flowers.
