Marvin L. (SHOT) McClanahan
Marvin L. "Shot" McClanahan, 79 years of age of Athens, West Virginia died Wednesday, November 30, 2011, at his home. Born in Dante, Virginia, on January 21, 1932, he was the son of the late John and Stella Edmonds McClanahan. Shot was the lone graduate of the 1950 class of Garden High School in Oakwood, Virginia, where he was a member of the 1949-50 Virginia state champion basketball team. That team captured the state championship after rallying from several points down in the final minutes of the game. Shot scored the winning basket by sinking a shot from half court as time expired. Ironically, Shot did not earn his nickname from basketball, but rather from his experience with a gun several years before when he picked up his father's "unloaded" shotgun and blew a hole through the ceiling of the family home. Shot served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and graduated from Concord College in 1959 with a degree in Business Administration. He worked in the auditing department of L.S. Ayers & Co., in Indianapolis, Indiana, before joining his brothers, John and Roger, as a member of Mac Construction Co. in Oakwood, Virginia, from 1967 – 1991. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, and the Sandy Valley Masonic Lodge #17, Grundy, VA. He attended the Garden United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Hud Matney, Roger McClanahan, John McClanahan, Paul McClanahan, and sisters Edna Hale, Mary Jane Browning and Hagar McClanahan. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Shelby Jean Kelly McClanahan; son, Hud McClanahan; and grandchildren, Solomon McClanahan and Zoe McClanahan, all of Athens. Funeral Services for Marvin L. "Shot" McClanahan will be conducted on Saturday, December 3, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at the Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home of Keen Mountain, VA; 1020 Big Skeggs Road, Oakwood, VA, 24631, with the Reverend Ray Amos officiating. Entombment will be at the Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill, Virginia where full Military Rights will be conducted by VFW 7360 of Grundy, VA.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 3, 2011, prior to funeral hour at 1:00 p.m. Pallbearers will be friends and family.
