Mary A. Ritter, 94 of Belvidere, NJ, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, October 13, 2010. Born on April 15, 1916 in Hackettstown, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Will G. and Mina Klotz Atwood. Mrs. Ritter had moved to Belvidere in 1928. She graduated from Belvidere High School as Valedictorian in 1933. The high school at that time was located at Third and Greenwich Streets. Mrs. Ritter was a 1937 graduate of New Jersey College for Women (now Douglas College), New Brunswick, NJ also as Valedictorian. She later received her teaching credentials from Montclair Teachers College. Mrs. Ritter was the president of the L.E. Ritter Lumber Company from 1983 until her retirement in 2004. She was predeceased by her husband Thomas F. Ritter whom she married on August 6, 1938. Mrs. Ritter had been a plane watcher during WWII; a member of the Red Cross, PTA, a former Cub Scout and Brownie Leader. She was a member of the Democratic Club and a Third District poll watcher. She served on the board of the Belvidere Free Public Library. She was a voracious reader of mysteries and a soft touch for dogs and especially cats. A brother, Will G. Atwood, Jr. and a sister, Cate Atwood had died earlier. Surviving are her children, Timothy and his wife Deborah, Christopher and his wife Marianne, Nicholas and his wife Georgette, Abigail, Deborah and Benjamin; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Isabel Dodd; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Atwood; brother-in-laws, James Ritter and his wife Emily, and John Cornish; and her caregiver, Jocelyne Gedee.
