Mary Ann Hodge age 61 of Dallas, Texas passed away September 3, 2011. Born to Joe and Mary Ann Hodge, Sr. on May 28, 1950 in Lexington, Mississippi.
Mary began her formal education at Saints Academy in Lexington, MS. At the beginning of her senior year in high school, the family relocated to Monroe, LA where in 1967 she graduated with honors at the age of 16 from Carroll High School. After graduating she continued her education in nursing at Northeast Louisiana University. During her junior year, Mary transferred to Southwestern Adventist University in Keene, TX and graduated in 1980 with a B.A. degree in Elementary Education, after realizing how much she loved working with children. In 1985 Mary received a Master's Degree in Education from Andrews University in Berrien Springs, MI.
A dedicated educator, Mary served as teacher or principal for nearly thirty years and was blessed to labor in various parts of the United States and internationally to include: Dallas & Tyler Independent School Districts (TX) and the Monroe City Public Schools (LA). She taught many years in Seventh-day Adventist Schools to include: Alexandria, LA; Boston, MA and Dallas, TX. One of the great joys of Mary's life was teaching children and working with adults as a missionary for two years (1986-1988) at Maxwell Adventist Academy in Nairobi, Kenya (East Africa).
Mary has been a Seventh Day Adventist for over 40 years and served faithfully in many capacities in the church to include: Usher, Sabbath School Teacher, Sabbath School Superintendent, and church school Teacher and Principal. In 1992 she was awarded the Thomas & Violet Zapara Award for Excellence in Teaching.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Mary Ann and Joe Ed Hodges, Sr.; two brothers, Joe Ed Hodges, Jr. and William Hodges. To cherish her memory she leaves. two sisters, Leatha Hodges_Douglas (Charles) and Roberta Hodges; three brothers, Sherman Hodges (Rosalind), Ed Hodges (Barbara) and Joseph Hodges (Theresa); two sister-in-laws; Jo Ann Hodges and Rose Hodges; one brother-in-law, Charles Douglas; one uncle, Eddie Archie; six nieces, seven nephews; eight great-nieces; seven great nephews; and a host of cousins, other relatives, church members and friends.
