Mary Barbara G. Whitehurst, 90, of Chesapeake, VA, passed away April 25, 2011, in Chesapeake General Hospital. A native of Gary, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late William and Anna Gleichmann, and the widow of Stanley E. Whitehurst. She retired from the Virginia State Board of Medicine as a Secretary. She was a member of Deep Creek Baptist Church and its Joyful Sound Choir. She had been a former Sunday School teacher and Girl Scout leader. She is survived by her two daughters, Diane W. Raup and her husband Kenneth of Johnson City, TN and Susan E. Phelps and her husband John of Chesapeake, VA; a son, Daniel D. Whitehurst and wife Diane of Phenix, AL; a brother, Paul R. Gleichmann of Vale, OR; five grandchildren, Wendy Weber and husband Jonathan of Raleigh, NC, Lauren Raup of Knoxville, TN, Mark Phelps of Raleigh, NC, Michael Raup of Knoxville, TN and Brittany Whitehurst of Phenix, AL; and a great grandchild, Quinn Weber of Raleigh, NC. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother, William. A funeral service will be conducted Friday at 12:30 p.m. at Deep Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Larry Ryals officiating. The burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Bridge Chapel Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
