"Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints". Our precious Mom, Mary C. Gerig, age 80, was called home to heaven, to the loving arms of Jesus, her Savior and Lord, on February 6, 2012. She was born September 7, 1931, to Rev. Clayton & Lilah (Burkholder) Steiner in Bluffton, OH. She grew up in Peru, South America, where her parents served as missionaries. Later, her family moved to Pandora, Ohio and then Fort Wayne, where she attended South Side High School, graduating in 1949. She graduated from Fort Wayne Bible Institute in 1952. On August 21, 1955 she married Wesley Lee Gerig, at First Missionary Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where her father was pastor at the time. Together Wes and Mary Carolyn went on to actively serve the Lord for over 50 years, serving at Fort Wayne Bible College/Taylor Fort Wayne University as well as filling in at countless churches as interim pastor. She was dedicated to the cause of Christ and His calling upon her life. She was a prayer warrior and encourager to many through her notes and phone calls. Each family member was richer for her many prayers for them. She worked for over twenty years in the Taylor Fort Wayne Bookstore and also loved to teach children in Sunday School, as well as sing in the church choir. She is survived by her husband, Wesley Gerig, her two sisters, Ruth Steiner and Magdalene (Stewart) Elder, four children, Jeannie (Timothy) Gerig Johnson, John (Julie) Gerig, Jeffrey (Jean) Gerig, and Jared (Laura) Gerig. She also leaves her 12 grandchildren and numerous other relatives and close friends. Although we miss her, she is not gone from our hearts, or our memories. She has gone home, but we will meet her again before the throne of our God, and will worship our Lord and Savior together for eternity. Relatives and friends may visit at D.O. McComb & Sons Foster Park Chapel, 6301 Fairfield Avenue, Fort Wayne, IN 46807, on Thursday, February 9, from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 pm. Funeral services will be held at First Missionary Church, 701 W. Rudisill Blvd. Fort Wayne, Indiana on Friday, February 10, at 2 pm with the Rev. Robert Martin and Rev. Keith Kotesky officiating. Burial will take place at Greenlawn Cemetery, Fort Wayne, Indiana. Our family would ask that any memorials be directed to the Sunshine Network Ministry of First Missionary Church, 701 W. Rudisill, Blvd., Fort Wayne, Indiana or World Partners of the Missionary Church, c/o Missionary Church Inc., P.O. Box 9127, Fort Wayne, Indiana 46899.
