Mary Hurd
Mary Ellen Hurd, 81, of Annapolis, died October 13 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a two-year struggle with lung cancer and congestive heart failure. She was born April 8, 1930, in a Southern Pacific Railroad section foreman's house in Anapra, NM. A high school dropout, she went on to earn Bachelor's and Master's degrees in English literature. She taught in public schools in New Mexico, California, Florida, Virginia, Texas, and Delaware, where she retired in 1993. She and her husband Claude Hurd moved to Annapolis in 1994. She was a docent at the National Gallery of Art for 14 years. She loved art, literature, bridge, travel, and most of all, enjoying a meal and glass of wine with her family. She was known for her outgoing and generous personality, sense of humor and candor. She is survived by her son, Donald Hurd; daughter-in-law, Diane Hurd; two grandsons, Byron and Russell Hurd, all of Annapolis; and sister, Connie Benson of El Paso, TX. Interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery Columbarium at a date to be determined. Arrangements by John M. Taylor Funeral Home of Annapolis.
