Mary Ellen Smyth (nee Savage), 75, former President of American Association of University Women Foundation (AAUW), business consultant, and English and Speech Instructor at Penn State and the University of Wyoming (UW), passed away peacefully March 9, 2011, in Chicago.
Mary Ellen attended UW, where she became a Pi Beta Phi earning a B.A. in English and Speech/Theatre (Phi Beta Kappa) and an M.A. in Theater. “Distinguished Alumna,” 2006.
She was a Governing Member at Brookfield Zoo, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations, and volunteered at the Oak Park Community Chest.
Devoted mother of Timothy Murphy (Christina Carr, J.D.) Smyth and the late Kevin Anthony Smyth.
Beloved wife of the late Walter Patrick Smyth, M.D.
Sister of the late Anthony Savage.
Memorial services are being planned in Chicago and out of state.
