Mary F. Sass, 87, of LaPorte, Indiana, left this world on the morning of Sunday, January 2, 2011 to enter the gates of heaven after an extended stay at Golden Living Countryside in LaPorte. She was born January 17, 1923 in Mansfield, Ohio, the daughter of Paul Reel and Blanche (Boze) Reel, who moved their family to LaPorte, IN in the 1930's. Mary was a gentle loving person who always had nothing but kind things to say and left the world a better place for having been here. She will be remembered and cherished for her kindness, wonderful cooking and willingness to always help a friend or family member at the drop of a hat. Mary was a homemaker for many years but she did work at Holiday Inn, Barbara Link Shops and Berkel, Inc. She was a member of First Christian Church. She enjoyed her friends at Delta-Theta-Tau being a fifty year member, the Kitchen Kin-Home Economics Club of Purdue Extension and the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Harmon Gray Post #83 for many years. She treasured her family and enjoyed traveling with Ken to visit family members around the country. On February 15, 1942, in LaPorte, she married Kenneth F. Sass who preceded in death July 22, 1993. She is survived by her four daughters - Carol (Richard) Peterson of Rolling Prairie, IN, Martha (David) Armey of St. Joseph, MI, Paula (Brian) Gannon of La Porte, IN, Mary (David) Kiningham of Ft. Wayne, IN; one son - Robert K. (Kathy) Sass of Michigan City, IN; six grandchildren - Christopher Voorhees, Sean Voorhees, Rachel (Dan) Schwartz, Kyle Kiningham, Brianna Gannon, Elliott Sass, and one great-grandaughter - Chloe Naccarato; two sisters - Virginia Byrne of CA, Elaine Hansen of CA. and one brother - Howard Reel of TX. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, loving husband Kenneth of over fifty years and two brothers, Robert Reel, Paul W. Reel. God Bless You Mother, may you rest in peace. We hope the big bands are playing and you are dancing with Dad again. Arrangements are being handled by Haverstock Funeral Home, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, Ind. Cremation will take place. A private family memorial service will take place, at a later date with Rev. Everett Shattuck, officiating with burial of ashes at the St. John Lutheran Cemetery, LaPorte, Indiana.
