Mary Jean Millholen, 85, of Abingdon Glen Village in Hickory, died Friday, January 27, 2012 at Palliative Care Center and Hospice of Catawba Valley. She was born on August, 27, 1927 in Eustis, Nebraska to the late Ludwig Wilhelm Gauger and Jeanette Kugler Gauger. Mary is survived by her husband, Gale; brother, Kaye Gauger and sister, Shirley Blank; sons, Gerald Millholen, Bill Millholen (Jane) and Eric Frick and daughter, Mary Michele; grandchildren, Victoria Policke (Paul), Jeanette Ark (David), David Millholen, India Millholen and Alex Frick; five great-grandchildren and extended family Marilyn Frick, Elaine Grady and Pebbles Anne. After leaving the flatlands of Nebraska in 1960, Mary and her family entertained fifty years of life at Trail's End on Lake Hickory. She was a Blue Star Mother, with all three of her sons serving in Vietnam. Mary enjoyed her daily crossword puzzles, weekly bridge club meetings, and especially spending time with her friends and family. A service to celebrate Mary's life will be held at New Jerusalem Lutheran Church in Hickory on Monday, January, 30 at 2:00 p.m. A gathering of friends and family will be held at the Abingdon Glen Village Clubhouse following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Father Flanagan's Boys Town of Omaha, Nebraska, 13603 Flanagan Boulevard, Boys Town, Nebraska 68010 or Palliative Care Center & Hospice of Catawba Valley, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, NC 28658. Bass-Smith Funeral Home is serving the family of Mary Jean Millholen.
