Mary L. McDonnell, 81, of Marquette, died Wednesday evening, August 3, 2011 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette. Miss McDonnell was born on November 4, 1929 in Marquette, a daughter of the late Donald F. and Julia (Burt) McDonnell and was a lifelong Marquette resident. Mary proudly served her country with the United States Army from 1950 through 1953. She worked at the former Elite Shoppe Tavern for over 30 years as a waitress. She was a member of St. Peter Cathedral. She is survived by one sister, Nancy Witmer of Huntsville, AL as well as several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death besides her parents were three brothers and two sisters. A private graveside service will be held at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Marquette. Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are kindly asked to consider the Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter, (UPAWS), 84 Snowfield Road, Negaunee, MI 49866 in Mary's memory.
