Mary M. Thornton, 89, a resident of Homewood at Martinsburg, PA, formerly of Norfolk, VA, and Roaring Spring, PA, went to be with her Lord and Savior Tuesday, January 31, 2012, at Homewood. She was born in Roaring Spring, PA, daughter of the late Jesse W. and Edith F. (Appleman) Malone. She married Roy D. Thornton, who passed away March 8, 1989. Surviving are two stepchildren: Sharon Knight and Jeffrey Thornton; four stepgrandchildren: Kelly Knight, Sherry Rosen, Jan James and Shannon Hocutt; eight stepgreat-grandchildren; two sisters: Anna G. Shriver and Bette J. Frye, both residents at Homewood at Martinsburg; 12 nieces and nephews: James Malone, Edith Diboski, Shirley Plunkett, Ralph Hanks, Edith Myers, Sam Dodson, Carl Richard Dodson, Joan Smith, Marcie Treese, Jan Speck, Dale Shriver and Carroll Miller; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers: Charles W., Edgar F. and Jesse P. Malone; four sisters: Emma Catherine Malone, Ruth Hanks, Gladys Dodson and Florence Malone; a niece, Sharon Russell; and two nephews: William and Charles Malone. Mary was a 1939 graduate of Morrison Cove High School and graduated from business school in Norfolk, VA. She retired in 1984 as a supply clerk from the Norfolk Naval Base. She attended Talbot Park Baptist Church, Norfolk, VA, and First Church of the Brethren, Roaring Spring, PA. She was an avid seamstress and enjoyed reading. Friends will be received from 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial service Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012, at the chapel at Homewood at Martinsburg, the Rev. Jerry McCuller officiating. Arrangements are by Miller Funeral Home, East Freedom, PA. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 6, 2012, at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk, VA, with the Rev. Keith Martin officiating. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel handling local arrangements. Memorial contributions may be given to Homewood at Martinsburg or your local library.
