Mary Palmer Graham was born on February 28th, 1911 in Fort Wayne, Indiana to Edwin J and Mary J Graham. EJ Graham was a manager at the General Electric small motors plant in Fort Wayne. Their family home was on Old Mill Road until EJ died in 1958 at which point Mary and her mother moved to Lincolnshire in Fort Wayne. Mary resided in Kingston Residence on the Winchester Road for the last five years of her life. She died peacefully there on August 27, 2011. Mary was oldest of three sisters. Florence Graham was born in 1914 but died in the influenza epidemic of 1919. Her younger sister, Phyllis Graham, was born in 1917 and lived until 2004. Mary graduated from South Side High School in 1929. She attended Western College in Oxford, Ohio and graduated from Northwestern University in 1933. She received a Masters in Counseling in the 1970s. She spent nearly her entire professional career at South Side High School, retiring after 35 years as a senior class advisor for 14 years. A generation of high school students has remained in touch with her throughout the balance of her life. Her parents were founding members of the South Wayne Baptist Church where Mary P Graham would become moderator in the 1990s. Mary P Graham was a regular patron of Hall's on Bluffton Road and the Gas House late into her 90s. She is survived by her nephew, Samuel Graham Pooley of Honolulu, Hawaii and her cousin, Sue Nation of Fort Wayne. Services will be held on Thursday, at 1 PM at D.O. McComb and Son's Foster Park Funeral Home, 6301 Fairfield Avenue, with visitation one hour before the service. A scholarship fund in her name was created at South Side High School in the 1990's by Duncan Whitaker of Washington, D.C., on of her former students with the intention of encouraging students who would not otherwise go to college to get that opportunity. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Mary Graham Scholarship Fund may be made to the South Side High School Foundation, 3601 South Calhoun Street, Fort Wayne, IN 46807; Kingston Residence, 7515 Winchester Road, Fort Wayne, IN 46819; or Donor's Choice.
