Brattleboro- Mary Patricia Villarejo, 96, of Thompson House, formerly of Morningside Commons, died Wednesday evening, June 8, 2011 at Thompson House. Mrs. Villarejo was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on January 30, 1915, the daughter of Vincent and Frances (Marshalek) Holan. She was raised and educated in Milwaukee and was a graduate of Wisconsin State College, where she received her B.A. in Art Education, later attending the Art Students League, an art school in New York City. Mrs. Villarejo worked for Time, Inc. as an art assistant and also had been employed by Norcross greeting cards and Marcou O'Leary & Associates, a landscape architectural firm in Washington, D.C. She also wrote and illustrated several children's books, including "A Santo for Pasqualita," "The Art Fair," "The Famous Blue Gnu of Colonel Kachoo," and "The Tiger Hunt," as well as numerous magazine articles. At the close of World War II she married Oscar Villarejo, a professor of English and Spanish literature, in New York City. A former resident of Washington, D.C., following the death of her husband in 1996 she moved to Brattleboro. Being an accomplished artist, she enjoyed art and painting. Mrs. Villarejo was a communicant of Saint Michael's Roman Catholic Church. Survivors include a niece, Jennifer Holan of Westminster, and a cousin, Jewell Hajny of Wisconsin. She was predeceased by one brother, Frank Holan. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 11:00 A.M. at Saint Michael's Catholic Church. Committal Rites and burial will follow in Morningside Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Mrs. Villarejo's name may be made to Kurn Hattin Homes, P.O. Box 127, Westminster, VT 05158.
