Danville: Mary Smith Ramsey, 95, a native and life-long resident of Danville, Virginia passed away December 20, 2011.
Mary was born on September 21, 1916 to the late Thomas Marshall Smith and Claude Smith Jensen. She was a lifelong member of Danville Wednesday Club and Main Street United Methodist Church until Main Street United Methodist Church closed and she became a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church. Through the years she was a member of the Thalhimers Club, the Danville Museum and volunteered at the Science Museum.
Mary had a great love for her family and friends. She enjoyed reading, bridge and tailoring. One of her great enjoyments was flower gardening at her former home on Seminole Drive. In her later years she had a great interest in oil painting and her main painting interest was scenes and barns from her family farm.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, R. Julian Ramsey; brother, Thomas Marshall Smith, Jr.; and sister, Dorothy Williams Mundy.
Left to cherish her memory is her loving daughter, Barbara Ramsey Conner of Gloucester Point, Virginia; one granddaughter, Sharon Conner Rooks and husband David; two great grandsons, Dylan Conner Rooks and Logan Coby Rooks all of Providence Forge, Virginia and several special nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services officiated by Reverend Valerie White will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 23, 2011 at Highland Burial Park, Danville, Virginia. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the cemetery.
We wish to express our deepest gratitude to her caregiver and friend Susie Johnson for her kindness and love. We would also like to thank her friends and neighbors while living on Seminole Drive and at Stratford House, and her church family from Main Street and St. Luke's.
We also wish to thank the staff at Roman Eagle and Sanders for their care.
In our loved one's memory, donations may be sent to St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 3090 North Main Street, Danville, Virginia 24540-1741 or Danville Life Saving and First Aid Crew, Inc.,
