Mrs. Mary T. (Cali) Simonelli, a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away at home with her loving family by her side on Friday, September 23, 2011, at age 79 after a courageous battle with a long term illness.

Mrs. Simonelli was born on September 18, 1932 in Boston, one of two daughters of the late Salvatore and Mildred (Tarabocchia) Cali. Raised and educated in Queens, NY, she moved to Melrose after meeting the love of her life, Michael L. Simonelli, whom she married on April 8, 1956. They settled in Melrose where they raised a family and her husband owned and is still operating the popular downtown business, Mike's Barber Shop, at 419 Main Street, Melrose

Mary worked for New England Telephone/Verizon for 20 years as an Assistant Manager. She was a Girl Scout Leader, a member of the Melrose Women's Catholic Club, Telephone Pioneers. For the past two decades Mary enjoyed and dedicated her time to volunteering for Melrose-Wakefield Hospital. Her family will lovingly remember her as a fan of all activities and accomplishments of her grandchildren and as a fabulous cook.

Mary was the beloved wife of Michael L. Simonelli with whom she shared 55 years of marriage. Devoted mother of Catherine M. "Cathy" Franklin and her husband Bill of Danvers and the late Michael J. Simonelli who passed on July 27, 1999. Dear sister of the Honorable Jacqueline "Jackie" A. Pitts of Portsmouth, NH. Cherished grandmother of Alicia and Andrew Franklin both of Danvers. Loving aunt of Joanne M. Lilly of Beaufort, NC, David J. Pitts of Greenland, NH, and Anthony Simonelli of Lawrence. Caring great aunt of Cali-Ann Lilly of Beaufort, NC, John David Bullock of Beaufort, NC, and Dalton Michael Pitts of Greenland, NH.

Relatives and friends will gather to remember and celebrate her life on Monday, September 26 for Visiting Hours from 4-8 PM at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St, Melrose and again on Tuesday morning at 8 AM before processing to St. Mary's Church, Herbert St, Melrose where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 AM.
