COLUMBIA - A Mass of Christian burial for Mary Virginia "Ginny" Wells Andrews, 90, will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 3, 2012, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Commendation and Farewell Prayers will be in Ft. Jackson National Cemetery at 12:00 Noon. The Rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. Monday, January 2, 2012, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with visitation following until 8:00 p.m.
Mrs. Andrews died Wednesday, December 28, 2011. Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late Wilfred Bush and Christie James Walker Wells. She was married to the love of her life for 58 years and was very devoted to her family and her faith. She was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and was very generous and giving, always doing for others. She loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Mrs. Andrews graduated from Columbia High School, the Columbia Hospital School of Nursing in 1944 and received her BSN from the University of South Carolina. She enjoyed dancing, playing bridge, traveling, quilting and attending her nursing class reunions. She was a competitive pistol shooter with her husband during earlier years of their marriage.
Mrs. Andrews was a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during WWII, the European Theatre. She worked as a nurse at the U.S. Marine Hospital, Providence Hospital, Ft. Jackson Hospital, the American Red Cross, Dorn VA Hospital and the Richland County Health Department. The best years of her career were while working in Labor and Delivery. She was a member of the American Legion Post 6, VFW 641, the Jamil Temple Daughters of the Nile, and the O'Brian Guild of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Mrs. Andrews volunteered well into her 80's at the VA Hospital.
Surviving are her husband, Charles P. Andrews; her daughter, Jeanne Andrews Wright (D. Scott); her son, Charles P. Andrews II; grandchildren, Andrew S. Wright and Elizabeth C. Wright all of Columbia. She was predeceased by a sister, Winifred Wells Orr and a brother, Wilfred Christie Wells.
