Mary Zembeck Gelpi passed away on Sunday, January 8th 2012, at the age of 91
after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years Marcel G. Gelpi, Jr., her parents John and Anne Zembeck of Portage, PA, her brothers John and Charles Zembeck, sisters Ann Zembeck Fiore, Helen Zembeck Lang and Marguerite Zembeck Plaeger. She is survived by her son, Marcel G. Gelpi, III and his wife Linda, two grandchildren Marcel "Marc" D. Gelpi and his wife Stephanie and Lauren Gelpi Biehl and her husband Chris and five great-grandchildren Alex Gelpi, Andrew, Matthew, Emily and Ashley Biehl. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Mary was a good wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was loved by all who met her and will be deeply missed.
Mary was a homemaker who was a wonderfully talented and creative woman. In her early years, she was a point guard for her high school basketball team as well as a cheerleader for the football team. She enjoyed many hobbies from flower arranging to ceramics to picture painting. As an active member of the Metairie Women's Club for many years, she devoted many hours of volunteer service to the organization. Playing bridge and participating in round dancing as well as traveling with her husband, were many of the things she enjoyed. Mary participated in the Senior Olympics in tennis and basketball, in which she received numerous medals. She and her husband Marcel were charter members of Lakeside Country Club. She was a devout Catholic and a parishioner of St. Angela Merici for many years.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass in the Chapel of LAKE LAWN METAIRIE FUNERAL HOME, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. at 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 . Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. until service time. Interment will follow in Metairie Cemetery where she will be interred with her husband.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff of Chateau Living Center for all of their support and comfort for Mary during her stay there.
