Music Emblem

Maxine Walker passed away gently at home in the loving presence of her caregivers and dear friends, Patty White and Marie Stover. January 1, 2008, Maxine suffered a stroke from which she gallantly battled to regain function. That was followed by a fall in which she broke her hip and still battled on. She regained enough function to return to her beloved singing and to pursue piano lessons, her goal when she moved to Willamette View Manner in June of '08. She was born Maxine Grace in Bend, Oregon where she joined her beloved big brother, Clyde and parents, Charles and Flossie Stanton. Her parents divorced when she was five. Flossie later married Herbert Charters and they all lived in Portland where brother Thomas was born. Maxine lived primarily in the Portland area until her death. Maxine graduated from Oregon State University and became the Administrative Assistant to Charles Montague at the Oregon Regional Primate Center where she remained for most of her working years. She was an active member of the National Women's Association (sic National Executives' Secretaries Inc) and was president during the Oregon Chapter's 25th anniversary year in 1977. Later she worked for the city of Lake Oswego, Oregon. Maxine's first husband was Bill Allen. Following their divorce she was single for several years. After four proposals, with the last one on his knee, reading a poem he had written for her, Maxine finally agreed to marry Stanley Babcock Walker. They had been married 23 loving years at the time of his death. Charles Stanton instilled a love of music in his daughter through his lively fiddle playing. She sang as a trained coloratura soprano in many choirs including the Lutheran Choir, Moreland Church Choir and Willamette View Chorus. She enjoyed golf, theater, the symphony and gardening. She and Stan took many trips together from Europe to Alaska. They also demonstrated their humorous side in several skits with her lifelong friend, Ruth Strejc and husband, Bob. They attended Moreland Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Flossie Charters and Charlie and Rosie Stanton, husband, Stanley Walker and brothers, Clyde and Tom Charters. She is survived by her nephew and nieces, Bradley Charters, Cathy Charters Stingley, Luanne Charters May and by cousins and their children as well as by Stanley's brother, Duane Walker, his wife, Doris and their children, Susan Walker Weaver and Jeffrey Walker. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Moreland Presbyterian Church or to The HANDLE Institute (It was the HANDLE approach that contributed to Maxine's recovery from the stroke and hip fracture).
