COLUMBIA Megan Monday (aka Pauline Cannarella Hatchell) died at her home on Wednesday, December 21, 2011, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on July 1, 1940 in Sumter to the late Joseph and Jewell Ridgell Cannarella.
Megan graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in sociology and anthropology and was Phi Beta Kappa. She was an award-winning watercolorist, horticulturist and recently published her first book, Bacon Grease, under the Pen name of Sophy Jones. She loved reading, writing, line dancing, painting, working in her yard and most of all, spending time with her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by three children: son, James Maurice "Wooly" Hatchell of Athens, Texas, son, Matthew Hatchell and daughter-in-law, Leslie, of York, daughter, Jennifer Minter and son-in-law, Jeremy, of Pinehurst, N.C. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Samantha and J. Liam Minter of Pinehurst, N.C., as well as her former husband, James M. Hatchell. She was predeceased by one brother, Joe Cannarella.
Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 28, 2011, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.
A party celebrating Megan's life is being planned for July 2012 to be announced. In lieu of flowers please make donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38101 (http://www.stjude.org).
