Melvin L. Iler, age 75, of Battle Creek died Monday, February 13, 2012 at Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice Residence, Battle Creek surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Iler was born on April 4, 1936 in Parma, Michigan to Kenneth and L. Belle (Bronson) Iler. He was raised on the family farm in Ceresco and had been a life long resident of the Marshall and Battle Creek areas. Melvin had been employed by the Kellogg Company for thirty-six years, retiring in 1993. He had also been employed by the Harper Creek School System as a bus driver for over 17 years. On August 25, 1956, he married the former Jean E. Rybka at the St. Philip Catholic Church in Battle Creek. Mr. Iler was a member of the Gull Lake United Methodist Church and the Kellogg 25 year Club. He was an avid motorcyclist and had been a member of the Gold Wing Tour Association. He and his wife had traveled all over the United States on their bike. He also enjoyed snowmobiling and traveling to their trailer located near the Harrison, Michigan area. Other hobbies included playing cards and hunting. Melvin was a very social person with an engaging personality. He enjoyed the company of his many friends at the Cedar Creek golf course. An annual fishing trip to Canada with friends was one of his favorite activities. He had never met a stranger and had a wonderful sense of humor. He is remembered by his family as being a very loving father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Jean; daughter, Kathy (Rick) Carl of Athens; sons, Jeffery (Peggy) Iler of Richland and Stephen (Christie) Iler of Sussex, Wisconsin; grandchildren, , Bradley (April) Iler, Brandi (Cole) Roberts, Missie (Kelly) Fields, Ashley Carl, Joshua Carl, Brandon Iler, (twins) Alexi (Jake) Aase and Zachary Iler and Nathaniel Iler; 10 great grandchildren; sister, KayBelle (Gordon) Ferris of Battle Creek; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Raymond Iler and Lauro Iler; and sister, Wilma Frey. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 2 PM to 4 PM and 6 PM to 8 PM at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Marshall. A funeral service to celebrate the gift of his life will be held 11 AM Friday, February 17, 2012 at the funeral home with Reverend Mona Joslyn of the Gull Lake United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Lyon Lake Cemetery. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the Gull Lake United Methodist Church or the Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice Residence.
