Melvin W. Kamtz, 88, of Loveland, passed away on Monday, September 28 at Berthoud Living Center. He was born on August 2, 1921 to Charles and Alma Kamtz on the family farm near Hampton, Nebraska. He attended Zion Parochial Elementary School and graduated from Hampton High School in 1939. Melvin enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1942. He married Donna Hansen in 1944. Melvin was discharged from the military in 1946, and the couple went back to farm in Nebraska. In his 'spare' time, Melvin built and repaired machinery and did carpentry work, building new homes and remodels. He farmed until 1966 when he moved the family to Loveland, Colorado where he worked in construction, building single family homes. He also built all of their furniture for their own home and was always doing projects for the family. In 1980, Melvin retired and they moved to Mesa, AZ where he played golf, tennis, and did remodel projects for others. Melvin and Donna moved back to Loveland in 1990 to be near their family. Melvin was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He served on many boards and was the Senior Choir director for several years. He was a lifelong member of the American Legion. Melvin loved participating and watching sports. He was the NE State Tennis Champion in high school, and a member of the basketball team that won the state championship. He also enjoyed softball and golf. He was an excellent tenor. Other joys were traveling in their RV and spending time with grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is survived by his daughter, Patricia Metzler and husband Dan of Midwest City, Oklahoma; 4 sons, Russell Kamtz and wife Carol, Robert Kamtz and wife Carolyn, James Kamtz and wife Stephanie, all of Loveland, and Jeffrey Kamtz and wife Kristina of Gilbert, Arizona; sister, Janelle Klouda; 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna, 1 sister, and 1 grandchild. The family wishes to thank all the staff at Berthoud Living Center for all the loving care they gave during his stay there. A memorial service will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 4650 Sunview Dr., Loveland on Sunday, October 4 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, building fund.
