Melvin Watkins was the son of Ms. Mardell Watkins born August 13, 1937 in the city of St. Louis, Missouri. He was the youngest of five brothers and sisters. All of his siblings preceded him in death, Lulah Mae Watkins, Sadie Ray, Robert Watkins, Jr. and Irvin Watkins. He received his education in the St. Louis Public School System. He rendered dedicated service to his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1957-1961. Melvin accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at Wagner Avenue Church of Christ under Reverend R.M. Moore. He carried the daily testimony of Jesus Christ miraculously taking the taste of alcohol and tobacco completely out of his mouth. He testified and lived the Gospel message of God's ability to completely deliver. In 1977, he joined the membership of the Friendly Temple Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. R.F. Davis where he has served as a faithful member of the Deacon and Trustee Board since his crowning as a deacon in 1984. Melvin continued to serve under the leadership of Pastor Michael Jones until his departure to glory. Melvin married the love of his life Mrs. Olga Lorraine Watkins in 1990 and he served faithfully as a loving and devoted husband and father. Melvin supported and cared for his wife throughout her battle with cancer until her final transition in February of 2003. Melvin Watkins was a servant and caregiver to anyone who crossed his path in need. He often set aside his personal needs and health issues to care for those who were in need of prayer and support. He exemplified the definition of a true man of God. Melvin leaves to cherish his memory two lovely daughters, Teniera Hubbard, Melanie Williams-Harper; son-in-law, Michael Harper; five grandchildren, Teiera, Jamica, Olga, Ra'Lona, Mela; two great-grandchildren, Jamari, Ny'la; seven sisters-in-law, Willie, Sheila, Patricia, Angela, Emma, Carolyn, and Juanita; three brothers-in-law, Joseph, Bernard, and Howard; and a host of nieces, nephews, loved ones and friends.
