Brett Rogers, age 49 of Little Rock, Arkansas died Tuesday, October 4, 2011. He was born in Arkadelphia, Arkansas to his late parents Spyres Eldred Rogers and Mary Dell Brame Rogers on June 19, 1962. Brett received his under graduate degree from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville in 1984 and then received his law degree from the UALR School of Law in 1987. Brett worked for the Bureau for Legislative Research for the State of Arkansas and was a member of St. Edwards Catholic Church. In addition, he loved reading, music and spending time with his boys and volunteering at their school.

Survivors include his wife of 13 years Miriam Rogers; two sons, Daniel Eldred Rogers and Alec Davis Rogers both of Little Rock, AR; one sister, Marsha Patterson (Bill) of Florida and one brother Jeff Rogers (Ruth) of Oregon; his adopted brothers and sisters, Andy Shaw of Little Rock, Lynn Plemmons (Donna) of Conway, AR, and Phyllis Edwards (Mark) of Little Rock; two brother-n-laws, Dan Martinez (Janet) of Illinois and Christian Martinez of Blue Island, Illinois and sister-n-law Jasmine Martinez of Blue Island, Illinois; cousins, George "Bud" Rogers (Beth) of Rogers, AR and Mary Pat Rabroker (Phil) of Dallas, TX along with Stephen and Christopher Rabroker; nieces and nephews, Bill Patterson III, Rusty and Ryan Grove, Risa Long (Perin), Daniel J. Martinez, Janet J. Martinez, Ryan Rogers, Kate Edwards and Eric and Ryan Plemmons; and three great nieces and nephews, Bill Patterson IV, Amy Patterson and Celia Long. He is preceded in death by his parents, two uncles and aunts, George Rogers (Georgia) and Hal Butler (Pat).

Funeral services will be 2:00pm on Saturday, October 8, 2011 at Griffin Leggett Healey & Roth Funeral Home, 5800 W. 12th Street, Little Rock, AR (501) 661-9111 with Msgr. Richard Oswald officiating. A visitation will be from 6:00pm until 8:00pm on Friday, October 7, 2011 at the funeral home.

Share a memory. When a friendship spans the better part of four decades, it is hard to decide which memory to share. Literally hundreds of images have flashed in my mind these last few days. I have so many memories dating back to when we met in seventh grade.
Images are hazy and fleeting, though until the moment our friendship was cemented when I spoke the words, “Brett, may I borrow a piece of paper?” in Miz Theo Whitting’s algebra class, landing us both in trouble for talking in class.
From that point forward the images are more numerous. I remember Brett giving me a ride to school almost every morning in high school, going with him shopping for a Cabbage Patch doll for his mother, spending nearly every Friday and Saturday night at Brett’s house watching SCTV (pronounced Scuhtuhv), The Great White North, and Saturday Night Live. I remember shooting pool at Brett’s house while listening to Motown hits. Everyone had to stop playing and hold his hand out to “Stop in the name of love…” on cue. Then there was the Trivial Pursuit craze, a game at which Brett was unbeatable. I remember endlessly debating, which was odd, as we were both on the same side. I remember that so much of the time we shared was a non-stop laugh riot, even when he dragged me to that cinematic classic, This Is Spinal Tap, or when Brett accidentally stabbed me in the thumb while acting out “South-Westside Story”. One night I made the mistake of falling asleep on the floor in front of the TV. I awoke to Brett and our friend Tim Williams throwing Cheetos in my hair and getting his Lhasa Apso, Ming, to eat them.
What I remember most about Brett, though, was his sharing and his innate ability to connect with people. He shared his faith with me, taking me frequently to Catholic and Greek Orthodox Mass. He shared his good times and sorrows, once coming in the middle of choir practice at my church to tell me his mother had been diagnosed with cancer and was dying, then immediately taking me to the hospital with him. I will never forget the day he called me and asked me to be a bridesmaid when he married his beautiful wife, or the phone call late the next year when he told me, “You are an aunt.” My most precious memory, though, is when I walked into that warm and peaceful hospital room, and saw Brett’s face as he cradled his newborn son, Daniel. Brett’s face was full of joy, bewilderment, love, awe, and wonder as he held God’s greatest miracle and gift to him. Brett’s devotion to his family and friends knew no bounds. Now his spirit knows none either.

We had recently reconnected after a very long time. We grew up together on Saxony Circle in southwest Little Rock and had attended Cloverdale Jr. High together. We would spend hours on his front porch debating everything. I can still remember him saying "Piccadilly London," and this has always stuck in my mind, as a memory. Funny though, I never knew what he meant by this. I guess that's why it stuck with me.

We often played Badminton in his yard and spent hours playing air hockey in his parents enclosed garage. I have many fond memories. We walked home together after school, many days. I truly considered him a great friend, and I sorry to hear about this.

Brett has always had such a great since of humor. He missed class a lot when we were in elementary school because of health but it never seemed to prevent him keeping up with whatever we were doing. He had his peculiar little sigh that Robin Holt asked him about. "Why do you do that?". He said, "My cat taught me!" We thought that was just the most creative answer we had ever heard and loved him for who he was! I know I would never have said anything like that at that age. My little brother Brett, for all his innate gentleness, was a tough cookie. After he was diagnosed with a severe and intractable seizure disorder that would have made most people give up any hope of a normal life, Brett attacked the problem through medication, radical and potentially dangerous brain surgery, and any other available measures. Through it all, he never lost his sense of humor, one that anyone who knew him can tell you was, for lack of a better word, singular. And in the end, he didn't just have a normal life. He had an extraordinary life. I freely admit I was envious of the way he made friends who stuck with him from grade school to adulthood. There are several funny quotes I quote, but the one that I always thought was hysterical was this one:

Brett was talking to me about his son, Daniel, once and he told me how a girl in Daniel's class had told him to "shut up". Brett explained to Daniel that would "only prepare him for marriage." lol

It was obvious to everyone that he loved his family. That is something I will never forget.

It was such a pleasure to reconnect with Brett through Facebook and the McClellan High School reunion. We were fellow "extreme" liberals and found much to talk about.
