Michael "Mick" Campbell, 68, of Marquette, died Friday, January 20, 2012 at his home. Mick was born on September 28, 1943 in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan to the late Lloyd and Helen (Bollman) Campbell. In his younger years, Mick was an amazing baseball player whose skill and determination got him drafted into the minor leagues by the New York Yankees. His heart remained in the game, as he was an avid baseball fan, never missing a Tiger's game on TV. He went on to graduate from Central Michigan University, and then continued his higher education, receiving two Masters Degrees in guidance and counseling from New Mexico Highlands University. He instilled a love of learning and the importance of education in both of his children. Mick previously owned and operated the Lumber Jack Tavern in Big Bay, where it was his pleasure to serve and socialize with many patrons and friends. He helped to organize numerous baseball, softball and horseshoe tournaments, as well as the first Big Bay Relay. He fondly recalled the many friends and characters that were a part of the LBJ. He was formerly employed by Pathways, first as the director of Brookridge Children's Residential Treatment Center, and later as Residential and Rehabilitation Services Director. He went on to work as Interim Director of the United Way of Marquette County. Mick also served as a marketing & fundraising specialist for the Special Olympics of Michigan. He initiated and organized their annual Softball Tournament in the Superior Dome and was instrumental on the committee that founded the Sports Training Camp. Mick eternally enjoyed helping others and found fulfillment in doing so throughout his entire career. His pastimes were numerous. He enjoyed sharing many memories hunting in the Huron Mountains with family. He was an avid reader and enjoyed working challenging crossword puzzles and had an appreciation of the arts of all kinds. He was also a former member of the Marquette Golf Club, enjoying a good round of golf whenever he could. Above all, his "Sunday Morning Call Around" was the highlight of his week and the delight of his family. Mick truly had a love affair with the U.P., specifically Marquette. He loved the people who lived here and the backwoods beauty of this area. Mick is loved and survived by two children, Casey (Cayman) Campbell of Chapel Hill, NC, son of Carol Ghidorzi and Abby (Karl) Shunk of Marquette, daughter of Jane Campbell; five grandchildren, Lucy, Sadie and Fred Campbell, Lily and Wyatt Shunk; special friends, Alice Reynolds and her son, Cory Petrey of Marquette; a sister, Cathy (Mark) Campbell-Olszewski of Houghton; brother, William (Caroline) Campbell of DeWitt; nieces and nephews, Molly (Matt) Meyers, Maggie (Tom) Howard, Airen, Kelly and Adam Campbell-Olszewski; a special aunt, Lois Campbell of Mt. Pleasant, MI, and several other dear cousins and friends, including Steven St. Onge from Tourville Apartments for his special care and compassion. Preceding him in death besides his parents was a special uncle, Patrick Campbell. Friends may call at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, January 27th at 12 noon in St. Michael Catholic Church with the Rev. Larry VanDamme officiating. Memorials are preferred to Sports Training Camp c/o Luanne Peterson, 321 E. Ohio St., Marquette, MI 49855. Memories may be shared at www.canalefuneral.com
