Michael Sparks, age 61, of Granite City, IL, went to heaven on January 13, 2013. Michael was born on May 6, 1951 in Granite City, IL. On August 4, 1977, Mike married Kathleen White, the love of his life in Granite City, IL. He received his associate degree in Criminal Justice from Southwestern Illinois College in 1973. Mike retired from the Granite City Police Department in 2001 after 28 years of service. He was the Appointed Public Relations Officer. His accomplishments include: developed and supervised 12 Neighborhood Watch Programs. Produced, filmed and aired three community wide informational videos. Created, wrote and edited the Crime Watch newsletter. Composed these federal grants, community oriented policing (COPS), Stolen Vehicles Task Force (HEAT), and various state grants for Selective Law Enforcement in partnership with Granite City School District #9. Mike gave over 600 presentations to schools, churches and civic organizations, on more than 50 topics. Was a keynote speaker for scores of events, including the Mosaic Pregnancy & Health Centers annual fundraising banquet. Mike was a training instructor who pioneered school shooting scenarios in order to train police personnel. He conducted instructional classes for GCSD #9 teachers and staff. Mike was appointed Chief Administrator, Office of the Mayor, Granite City, IL 2001-2004, Appointed Director of Granite City Homeland Security Task Force, Director of Public Safety, Gateway Regional Medical Center, Granite City, IL 2004 – 2006. Mayoral candidate for the city of Granite City, 2006 and the Director of Security for Y.T.B. Mike also done volunteer work, he was co-founder and board member of Mosaic Pregnancy & Health Centers for 26 years, a non profit organization dedicated to helping women through untimely pregnancies. He also received many honors that include recipient of ten Police Department Commendations. Recipient of seven Letters of Police Department Recognition, recipient of the 1993 Law Enforcement Award from Optimist International, recipient of 65 letters of civil commendation and Department of the Month, Gateway Regional Medical Center, May 2005. But most importantly, he served the Lord, Jesus Christ faithfully and honorably since 1978. "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing." 2 Timothy 4:7, 8. Mike will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. Mike is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen Sparks of Granite City, IL; five wonderful children, Shannon (Chad) Hoerle of Breese, IL, Justin (Mandy) Sparks of St. Louis, MO, Hannah (Richard) Skirball of Granite City, IL, Elizabeth Sparks of Granite City, IL and Micaela Sparks of Granite City, IL; eight adoring grandchildren and many dear friends. A celebration of life service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at Destiny Church of St. Louis, 1809 Des Peres Rd. Des Peres, MO. 63131 with Pastor Jim Stern officiating. Private family interment will be held at St. John Cemetery, Maryville Rd. Granite city, IL. In lieu of flowers, the Sparks Family request memorials donations can be given to the Michael Sparks and Family Memorial Fund at GCS Credit Union, Maryville Rd. Granite City, IL.
