Nathaniel James Booker was born on April 21, 1945 in New York, New York, son of Mary and Nathan Booker. Educated in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Public School System, he was a high school graduate. Upon his graduation from high school, Nathaniel enlisted in the United States Army. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War in which he served two tours of duty, his first with the 184th Chemical Platoon. He received many medals and commendations such as, the Bronze Star Medal for service from October 1967 to October 1968, an Army Commendation Medal with "V" device for heroism exhibited on March 25, 1968, two Oak Leaf Clusters for meritorious service against communist aggression from September 1969 to December 1970, Air Medals for meritorious achievement in aerial flight and for actively participating in more than 25 aerial missions over hostile territory from November 1967 to March 1968 and for April 1970 to August 1970. After serving his country for 13 years, he was honorably discharged through Fort Dix in New Jersey having earned the rank of Master Sergeant (E-7). Nathaniel retired as a Chemical Operator from Merck and Company in Rahway, New Jersey. He was a member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge #1075 in Rahway. Nathaniel James Booker departed this life on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at Kindred Hospital New Jersey – Rahway in Rahway, New Jersey at the age of 66. He was predeceased by his parents, Nathan and Mary Booker. He leaves to cherish fond memories, a son, Jamal Booker of Yeadon, PA; a daughter, Nicole Smith of Killeen, TX; two grandchildren, Nyla and Jordan Smith; his fiancée, Gail Gordon of Linden, NJ; two stepsons, Jayson and Micheal Gordon of Linden, NJ and a host of other relatives and friends.
