COLUMBIA - Nick William Nickas, 82, passed away Sunday, January 22, 2012. Born November 28, 1929 in Columbia, he was the son of the late William Nick and Fotika Mavrides Nickas. He was an active member of The Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church where he served on the Parish Board , Church Committees and was president of the Parish Council. He was a 1951 graduate of the Citadel as a Civil Engineer. Upon graduation he was commissioned as a lieutenant in the US Army Corp of Engineers, where he was deployed to the Korean Conflict. Mr. Nickas was an engineer in the construction industry for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Tina Trakas Nickas; sons and daughters-in-law, William N. Nickas (Teresa) of Tallahassee, FL and Sam N. Nickas (Billie Jean) of Columbia; grandchildren, he was very proud of Caroline, Olivia, Gracie and Andy; brother, George W. Nickas (Mary) of Columbia; sister, Mary N. Mandanis (Dr. Nicholas, deceased); and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 12 noon Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Trisagian Prayers will be recited at 6 p.m. Tuesday with visitation following until 8 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church Building Fund or Community Homecare and Hospice.
