Nita Simpson Turrentine passed away in Albuquerque, New Mexico on January 20, 2012. She was born on a farm near Moran, Shackelford County, Texas, on September 21, 1920. She is survived by one sister, Eunice Simpson Tull of Levelland, Texas; her son, Tom Turrentine and wife, Terry Sheehan of Albuquerque, New Mexico; granddaughter, Ana Turrentine Mizelle and husband, Mark; great-grandchildren, Christopher, Maddie, and Molly of Rogers, Arkansas; stepson, Tom Andrews Jr. and wife Bonnie of Albuquerque, New Mexico and his brother and sisters, Andy, Toni, and Casey and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers, R.L. and T.J. Simpson, sisters, Opal Simpson Evans, Adilean Simpson Clements, and Hope Simpson Nicholson, and husbands, Alton Turrentine and Everett Spurlin. Nita lived a full life, blessed with close friends and family all her days. With husband Alton Turrentine, she owned or managed a number of businesses, including the Crossroads Café (Muleshoe, TX), Blackie's Café (Route 66, Moriarty, NM), and the Railroad Club (Belen, NM). She and husband Everett Spurlin worked all over the US and also in Panama and the Bahama Islands building transmission towers. In later years, she owned the El Toro Lounge in Truth or Consequences, NM, where she served her own homemade tamales, posole, beans, and other New Mexico dishes. She worked at a number of jobs before retiring to her sister Opal's farm near Alvarado, TX. She eventually moved to be near her son, first living in Seattle, WA, then Bentonville, AR, and finally back in New Mexico (her favorite place) in Albuquerque. The family wishes to thank Jill and her wonderful caregivers at Copper Rose Assisted Living, and the exceptional caregivers, nurses, social worker, and chaplain from Heartland Hospice. A memorial service will be held in Levelland, Texas, at the First Christian Church, 311 Clubview Drive, on Saturday February 18 at 11 AM. The service will conducted by Reverend Shannon Gresham, Nita's great-nephew. A reception will follow the service.
