Dryden, VA

Noah Vernon, 93, went to be with his Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ on Friday (Aug. 10, 2012) at the home of his granddaughter in Dryden, VA.

He was a lifelong resident of Wise and Lee Counties. He was a retired coal miner with the Westmoreland Coal Company, with 45 years of service. He was a member of the U.M.W.A. District #28, Local #1607. He was a member of the Holiness Church of God In Jesus Name in Big Stone Gap. Mr. Vernon was looked up to and admired by his fellow believers and he was known by those who knew him as a "Prayer Warrior," who believed five signs following believers.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Clara Ruth Vernon; an infant granddaughter, Angel Star Ruth Vernon; a great grandson, Christopher Sturgill; six brothers, Ishmael, Homer, Madison, Paul, Elmer and Samuel Vernon; and five sisters, Ethel Payne, Mary Stanley, Elizabeth Lackey, Mae Gardner and Ella Ette Maley.

He is survived by ten daughters, Carolyn Sturgill of Webster, IN, Sue Vernon of Derby, VA, Sandra (Jimmy) Rogers of Duffield, VA, Rachel (James) Tyner of Dryden, VA, Deborah Vernon of Duffield, Cora (Jessie) Garrett of Dryden, VA, Donna Hobbs of Rogersville, TN, Teresa Vernon of Clinchport, VA, Joanne Vernon and Tonya (Richard) Robinson, both of Big Stone Gap, VA; three sons, Stephen (Argie) Vernon of Jonesville, VA, Ben (Iva Dell) Vernon of Gate City, VA and Charles Vernon of Appalachia, VA; sister, Julia Young of Kingsport, TN; many, many grandchildren and great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday at Holding Funeral Home (17 E. 3rd St., N.) in Big Stone Gap.

The funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Thursday in the funeral home chapel with Bro. Noah Vernon, Bro. Jamie Coots and Evangelist Allen Williams officiating.

Burial will follow at Powell Valley Cemetery in Dryden, VA.

The family will serve as pallbearers.
