Norman M. Hendrickson, 94, of Cambridge, will always be remembered as a man with a joke or a story to tell and he left behind a great story when he died on Saturday, February 16, 2013.
When his beloved wife Gwendoline died on Friday, February 8, 2013 he told her that he would see her soon and Norm kept his word. On his way to her memorial service, dressed in his funeral clothes, riding in a limousine, he took his last breath and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the funeral home. At his family's request, Norm was casketed and his body was placed in the room with his wife so that friends and family could say their final goodbyes to both of them. As one of his daughters said, " Surprise. It's a double header."
Norm was born March 5, 1918 in Katona, New York in Westchester County, the son of the late Frank Leroy and Zerola Matteson Hendrickson. The family moved to Cambridge and Norm graduated from Cambridge Union School, Class of 1937.
While serving in the United States Army during World War II, he met his beloved Gwen who was serving in the British Royal Air Force. She immigrated to the United States and they were married on May 29, 1947. Their entire married life was spent in Cambridge.
Norm was the Assistant Postmaster in Cambridge for 34 years. He was an avid stamp collector and model train enthusiast. He was a Boy Scout leader for many years; a member of the Cambridge Salem Masonic Lodge; a member of Capt. Maxson Post # 634 of the American Legion and a member of the Embury United Methodist Church.
Norm was the loving father of Merrilyne A. Hendrickson (Scott), Norma-Lee Hendrickson Howland (Philip) and the late Robert W. Hendrickson; the caring grandfather of Jill S. O'Neill (Steve), Kyle R. Hendrickson, Kaitlin E. Hendrickson and the late Eric T. Hendrickson. He was blessed to have seven great-grandchildren-Erin O'Neill, Steven O'Neill, Nathan O'Neill, Eric Hendrickson, Emily Wilson, Alexis Dickson and Rob Dickson.
There will be no additional calling hours.
A graveside service, with military honors, will be held on Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at
10 :00 AM at Woodlands Cemetery, Cambridge.
For those wishing to remember Norm in a special way, the family suggest donations be made in his name to an animal shelter or veteran's association of your choice.
