Norman Thomas Nyland was born December 8, 1936 in Wolf Lake Township to Thomas and Lillian (Harvala) Nyland. He was raised and educated near Snellman and attended country school at District 75 and later Frazee High School. In February of 1957, Norm was united in marriage to Dorothy Dorman. Norm served with the United States Army from 1957-1959 and was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska. Following his honorable discharge, Norm moved to Detroit Lakes and started Norm's Welding & Radiator Repair. Norm enjoyed playing horseshoes, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and playing whist. He also enjoyed watching a good Western on T.V. Norm had a great sense of humor. From bending the rules in a game of whist, his famous cliché with family, "Am I right or Am I wrong", to a good story in conversation, Norm's love for his family will always be remembered. Norm is survived by his children: Greg of Fargo, Norman Lee (Becky) of Sabin, Sue Jorschumb of Moorhead and Sharon (Doug) Daak of Detroit Lakes. He is also survived by his 10 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren along with four sisters: Thelma Mitchell of Detroit Lakes, Pearl "Mickey" (LeRoy) Berg of Detroit Lakes, Elvie (Vern) Zitzow of Detroit Lakes, Lois (Bruce) Mitchell of Kalispell, MT and five brothers: Wally (Pat) Nyland of Ada, Ed (Kathyrn) Nyland of Alexandria, Earl (Betty Jo) Nyland of Lexington, KY, Jerry Nyland of Detroit Lakes and Alan (Kathy) Nyland of Dorset. He is preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter: Jackie Jorschumb, grandson: Christopher Jorschumb, sister: Viola Wald and three nephews: Kirby Nyland, Dudley Gjersvig and Pat Wald. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Hospice of the Red River Valley.
