Ola Mae Ewing

Ola Mae Ewing died peacefully at her home in Lubbock, TX on Tuesday, November 30, 2010. Ola Mae was born on May 7, 1915 in Denton, TX to John Sidney Stockard and Rosa Lee Vance Stockard. They provided a wonderful Christian home, and Ola Mae accepted Christ and later made a special commitment to follow His leadership in service. She felt a special love and call to teach children.

Ola Mae graduated from Texas Women’s University and did graduate work at North Texas State University in Denton and Southwestern Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth. She taught school in Harold, TX from 1935-40, and married Lattimore Ewing June 24, 1940 in a double ceremony with her sister, Ruby Lee Stockard and Gordon Douglas.

Ola Mae & Lattimore moved to Lubbock in 1941 when he was called as Student Worker and later educational Director and Administrator at First Baptist Church in Lubbock. Ola Mae served as Director of Student and Youth work at First Baptist in Lubbock from 1943-45 when Lattimore was in World War II. Ola Mae continued service in Sunday School Leadership, WMU, Love in Action, and taught 5 year-old Sunday School for 25 years. She also taught VBS to children of missionaries in Baranquilla, Columbia on a mission strip in July, 1985. She had a heart for missions and was thrilled her son, Larry and wife Melinda serve as missionaries in Gyor, Hungary.

After 17 years away from the classroom, Ola Mae had the opportunity to teach at Rush Elementary School in Lubbock from 1959-80. For 21 years it was her joy to teach 1st grade there.

Ola Mae was lady of grace, a loving and caring wife and parent, a beloved teacher, and devoted to the service of the Lord. Her husband, Lattimore Ewing preceded her in death in 1998 and a sister, Jackie Stockard Uehlinger died November 5, 2010.

Survivors include a daughter, Larita Ewing of Dallas, TX; a son, Larry Ewing and wife Melinda who live and serve as missionaries in Gyor, Hungary; two sister, Ruby Lee Douglass of Canyon, TX and Lucille Stockard of Lubbock; two granddaughters, Elisa and husband Scott Krolczyk of Spring, TX and Emily and husband Cee Arnett of Woodward, OK; a grandson, Austin Ewing and wife Kim of Allen, TX; three great-granddaughters, Haley, Avery, and Emmy-Kate Arnett of Woodward, OK; and one great-grandson, Carter Ewing of Allen, TX; and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Ewing’s funeral service will be held Saturday, December 4, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church sanctuary with Dr. D. L. Lowrie, Rev. John Ballard, Rev. Randy Holman, and Rev. Bill McGraw officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial park under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday evening at Sanders Funeral Home from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Memorials may be given to First Baptist Church or a charity of choice.
