Otome Hasegawa

Otome was born September 5, 1906 in Okayama, Japan to Momokichi and Asano Motobayashi… on October 11, 2010 she quietly died in her home in Salt Lake City, Utah at age 104!

Following her graduation from Okayama High School in 1923 Otome married Masuta “Harry” Hasegawa in 1924 and they sailed to the United States where he was employed in Portland, Oregon working in the Japanese Import business.

Kazue “Betty”, their daughter was born in May of 1925 followed by Noboru “Paul” in 1927. The family moved to Long Beach, Washington where they opened an Asian Curio Shop.

After leaving the Minidoka Relocation Camp in July of 1945, the family then moved to Salt Lake City, Utah where Otome began working at the Eagle Laundry where she continued to work until she retired in 1970.

In 1953 Otome became a United States Citizen.

Otome was a gifted cook, loved to knit and crochet, she also sewed most of her clothes and was an avid gardener.

She is preceded in death by her husband Masuta “Harry” Hasegawa who passed on in July of 1981 and leaves behind her daughter, Betty (Mitsuo ) Morishita also her son, Paul Hasegawa; her grandchildren Debbie (Alexander) Contini, and Aaron Morishita of New York; Roxanne, Stacey and Kory (Andrea) Hasegawa, all of Salt Lake City; and her great-grandsons Thomas and Robert Contini.

Funeral Services will be Saturday, October 16, 2010, 11 am at Mountain View Memorial Mortuary, 3115 East 7800 South. A viewing will be held 1 hr prior to services. Interment at Mountain View Memorial Cemetery.
