Burlington- Patricia M. McCormick, 87 of Burlington, a former resident of Marlboro Avenue in Brattleboro died peacefully Thursday afternoon, June 23, 2011 at Starr Farm Nursing Center in Burlington. Patricia was born in New Hartford, Connecticut on July 25, 1923 the daughter of Herbert and Margarite (Ferris) Maxfield. She was raised and educated in New Hartford and graduated valedictorian of the Gilbert School in Winsted, Connecticut, Class of 1941. She went on to attend the University of Vermont in Burlington where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry in 1944. Patricia was employed as a science department assistant at Brattleboro Union High School from 1970 until her retirement in 1987. She was active with the Brattleboro Home Demonstrators Group and for several years served as a Girl Scout leader. Mrs. McCormick was a former member of First Baptist Church in Brattleboro. Patricia was an avid reader and enjoyed travel and knitting. While a resident at Starr Farm she was very active with floral arranging for the facility, a talent that was appreciated by both the staff and other residents. A faithful and devoted wife and loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother her life centered around her family. She especially enjoyed time shared with them. On December 18, 1943 in College Park, Maryland she was married to Thomas A. "Spider" McCormick. Her husband of 65 years predeceased her in December of 2008. Survivors include two sons, Thomas A. McCormick and wife Deborah of Montpelier and Bruce M. McCormick and wife Margaret of Windsor, Connecticut, one daughter, Susan M. Mongeon and husband Edward of Essex Jct., nine grandchildren, one great granddaughter and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband she was predeceased by one son, Charles McCormick who died in January of 2008, and three sisters. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, July 6th at 11:00 A.M. at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home with Pastor Suzanne Andrews of First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery where she will be laid to rest beside her husband. Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday from 10:00 A.M. until the start of the services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mrs. McCormick's name may be made to The Charles H. Butterfield Award which is given to an outstanding student in science and the arts, c/o Steve Perrin, B.U.H.S., 131 Fairground Road, Brattleboro, Vermont 05301. Mrs. McCormick's immediate family wishes to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the entire staff at Starr Farm Nursing Center for the wonderful care and compassion their mother received while she was a resident.
