My beloved husband of 24 year, Patrick Gilles, passed away unexpectedly on July 16, 2010. One week before his death, he celibrated his 51st birthday. Pat had two wonderful sons, George who is 14 years old and Patrick who is 13 years old.

Pat was born on July 9th, 1959 and grew up in Riverdale, IL. I met Pat when we were both 19 years old at Western Illinois University. He was a very handsome guy with long red hair and a freckled face and I was a funny looking girl from Japan who spoke very little English. I fell in love with him immediately and we dated through college. After graduating, however, we decided to go separate ways. I went back to Japan and he moved on to work on his Ph. D at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Six months later, however, he wrote me a letter saying “I miss you and I want to visit you in Japan.” So he came and stayed with me in a tiny studio apartment in Tokyo for 6 weeks. We had a great time in Japan and talked about getting back together. After going back to the U.S., he sent me an engagement ring. However, I was not quite ready at the time and did not give him a definite answer. According to his sister, Eileen, Pat was devastated. Another six months went, and I was ready to marry him. Unfortunately, Pat was very upset and would not take me back. I was desperate and wrote him a letter every day for several months. Finally, he told me to come back to the U.S. On March 18th, 1986, Pat and I got married in a City Hall in Chicago and had a wedding on July 20th, 1986.

We moved to San Diego in 1988 for his Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, CA. We had our first baby, George, in 1995 and another son, Patrick, in 1997. Without a question, Pat was the most dedicated dad to his children. He spent so much time with the boys, coaching their soccer teams and taking them to many sports events. He volunteered as an AYSO soccer coach for 8 years. He inspired and encouraged many kids on his teams as well. Pat loved George and Patrick so much. He taught them by example, how to be tough, polite and humble. He was also very proud of their accomplishments in school and sports.

Pat worked at Life Technologies, formally known as Invitrogen, in Carlsbad for over 10 years. He held various positions at the company through those years, but at home he never talked about his work. So I did not know Pat as a scientist and I did not even think he had many friends at work. Boy was I wrong to think that. During the viewing service, I had an opportunity to speak with many of his coworkers and found out that Pat was loved by so many people. Everyone I talked said Pat was the nicest guy they ever met, very dependable and he was the “go-to” guy when they needed help. He was passionate about science and dedicated to his work. Also, Pat was always the first guy to be at work. Many were wondering what time he actually went to work every morning. Well, he got up around 5am every day, got ready and left. So my guess is about 6am. It is very comforting to know Pat loved his work and enjoyed working with many of the coworkers.

To me, Pat was like “fresh air.” Because of him, I could breathe, stay alive and feel great, but I often took him for granted. However, without him, I could not breathe and would not know what to do. Now, he is gone, I must learn how to breathe by myself. But, I will stay strong for my sons, George and Patrick. I will raise them to be wonderful human being just like Pat and keep his legacy going. Pat, I miss you so much and love you forever.

Love,

His wife and best friend, Miho

Patrick N. Gilles, Ph.D.
