Paul E. "Cooch" Couture died Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at the age of 49 following a two year struggle with cancer. He died at home surrounded by his loving family under the care of Lake Superior Hospice. Paul was born in Libertyville, Illinois on December 26, 1962 to Paul F. and Sharon (Gauthier) Couture. He graduated from Gwinn High School in 1981, and went on to graduate Suma Cum Laude from Northern Michigan University with a Bachelor's Degree in criminal justice and conservation in 1985. Paul also was a graduate of the academy for corrections officers, finishing in the top ten of his class. Paul worked as a corrections officer for the past 22 years at the Marquette Branch Prison. He was recognized with the Department's Medal of Valor in 2007 for his outstanding demonstration of dedication and professionalism. Paul loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman, hunter, and golfer. He also was one of the Green Bay Packers biggest supporters. Paul was a wonderful husband and father, and his true joy in life was his wife, Polly, and their daughter, Lindsey. He had a smile for everyone he met and was a wonderful friend to everyone who knew him. Paul is survived by his wife, Paulette (Weiland), whom he married on October 24, 1992, and his daughter, Lindsey, the loves of his life. His dog, Maggie, will miss the sub sandwiches they always shared together while hunting. Paul is also survived by his mother, Sharon (Gauthier) Couture of Gwinn; sister, Linda and her children, Jennifer & Zachary Hopper of Marquette; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Paul F. Couture; grandparents, Ben & Luella Gauthier and Archie & Gladys Couture. Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2012 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Gwinn United Methodist Church. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. in the church with Rev. Leon Jarvis officiating. Interment will be held in Park Cemetery in the spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be directed to an educational fund for his daughter, Lindsey, at Marquette First Federal Credit Union. The Canale-Gwinn Funeral Home is assisting the family where memories may be shared at www.canalefuneral.com
